Shay team unchanged for Senior Cup match

For their match with Leeds United in the West Riding County Senior Cup competition at Elland Road to-morrow night (7.30), HalifaxTown will field a team unchanged from that which vanquished Bradford City, namely- Johnson; Roscoe, Stanley; Harrison, Lorenson, Large; McCall, Smith, South, Tilley, Blackburn.

Town are the holders of the Cup. Last season (writes "Hotspur" ) they forced a goalless draw in the smi-final at Elland Road and won the replay 3-0, to go on and defeat Bradford City in the Final with a Stan Lonsdale goal. Leeds United were held at home 3-3 by Everton on Saturday and expect to field a strong side.

Town's manager, Mr Harry Hooper, did not watch the Bradford City game at the Shay as he was out investigating recommendations from his scouts. He told me to-day, that he was finalising a report on one youngster he watched, and with whom he was quite satisfied.

Town's manager recently made an offer for Ronnie Harbertson, the Lincoln City and former Darlington centre forward, who hails from Bedlington but it was turned down because the amount was not enough. "The fee asked by Lincoln City was far in excess of what I could pay," Mr Hooper told me.

TOWN LOSE WEST RIDING CUP

Hard fight, but Leeds United quick to seize chances

Leeds United 3, Halifax Town 0

Halifax Town, the holders, made a strong fight in defence of the West Riding Cup, at Elland Road, last night, but their First Division opponents gave them a lesson in snapping up chances.

In an entertaining first half there was little to choose between the teams, but Halifax's persistence in the through pass broke down because too often the ball skidded off the wet turf well ahead of the man it was intended for. After the interval, Leeds produced most of the dangerous attacking moves, and the Halifax front line faded.

Halifax's chief strength was in defence and in particular in their halfback line with Large, who covered a tremendous amount of ground, outstanding. He subdued Cameron and found time to try and set his forwards raiding.

Harrison, too, generally blotted out Peyton while Lorenson was a commanding centre half against the lively McCole.

But it was on the wings where Leeds had a clear pull . Francis the coloured South African and Overfield frequently bewildered the Halifax defence with some skilful dribbling and acurately placed passes. In particular Stanley had a harrassing against Francis.

Storming Start

Of the Town forwards, Blackburn was the best and his efforts at directness set an example to some of his colleagues. South was overshadowed by Charlton and little was seen of the right wing pair Smith and McCall.

Town made a storming start with Harrison crashing in a 40 yard drive which Burgin brilliantly turned round the post for a corner. That was the nearest Halifax came to a goal before Leeds opened their score in the 24th minute. Francis cut in from the wing and squared the ball back to Peyton who scored with a fierce drive.

Halifax's other most noticable scoring effort came from Blackburn who shot powerfully from 30yards but the ball just passed the upright with Burgin beaten.

Leeds' second goal came in the 50th minute when the ball was stabbed into the goalmouth and McCole scored from close range. In the 83rd minute, Overfield sealed Halifax's fate with a well-placed ground shot.

Late raids

Even so, Halifax went near in two late raids Smith and South both making determined efforts to score. The attendance was 5,000
